Word ending patterns: in, ain and ing

When words end in the letters, i and n,  they don't always make the final /in/ sound as in twin.  When the letters, i and n,  follow the vowel a as in ain, the ai  join together to make the long a sound heard in train. In this post we will also review words that are commonly mispronounced by saying the /in/ sound instead of the correct  ing spelling sound
.

When the vowel, a, comes before the letters in, the sound changes.  The a and i join together (ai)  to make the long a sound as in rain, not as in twin.
