Suffix ed Makes Three Sounds: id, t and d

Kids often have a difficult time with  the sounds ed makes when added to a root word.  Kids often say ed but that is not a sound the letters e and d make.  The three sounds are id, t and d.

Teaching during covid -19 Y is a vowel and can make a long i sound or a long e sound

Y makes the long i sound when... 

(1)  it is the only vowel in a short word and is the very last letter in the word (pictured) fly

(2) it is in the spelling pattern y___ e - rhyme

(3) it is the last letter in a syllable - dryer

Y makes the long e sound when 

(1) the y is at the end of a two syllable word (pictured) happy

(2) it is part of a suffix

Make a sorting board  - have kids sort the pictures and words according to the sound y makes 

(long i or long e)

Create  a large y chart and sort the pictures provided below according to the sounds y makes
