Which /oo/ sound - is it the /oo/ in look or the /oo/ in cool?

Which /oo/ sound?
There is really no way for students to determine which sound to use by looking at the word.  That is why it s is important to teach both sounds.

Begin by introducing the oo sound heard in the word look. It is referred to as the short oo sound  On index cards write the words: book, foot, look, shook, wood, brook, good, nook, stood, wool, cook, hook, retook, took, unhook.  Buy big googly eyes from the dollar store or draw them on a bright poster board. Review the sound and say each word emphasizing the sound
Continue with activities to teach words with this pronunciation of oo
Fill in the correct words from the word bank to complete the sentences.

October Base Ten Frame Templates

Tens frames with 2 and 3 numbers (addends)  using erasers as counters
2 Addends
Students had to choose two types of items, to correspond with the two different colors (light gray and white),  In this example the student chose pumpkins (6) to place on the 6 gray spaces.  Next, the student chose ghosts (4) to place on the 4 white spaces.  6 + 4 = 10.
3 Addends
Students had to choose three types of items, to correspond with the three different colors (dark gray, light gray and white),  In this example the student chose cats (6) to place on the 6 dark gray spaces.  Next, the student chose ghosts (3) to place on the 3 white spaces.  The student's last choice was (1) pumpkin to place on the light gray space.  6 + 3 + 1 = 10.
Repeat routine following the different colors
If you don't want to use erasers, have students color in the spaces and then write the equation
