Compound Words - A compound word is a word that is composed of two words that can stand alone. Compound words do not include words with prefixes such as unfair or words with suffixes such as helpful. For the below activity children folded a pieces of paper into three sections. The picture on the left shows the front of the folded paper with pictures of compound words placed on the front. The picture on the right shows the inside of the paper with two pictures depicting each compound word displayed on the front.
For the above activity, we chose paper with illustrations of compound words: cupcakes, footballs, butterflies and baseballs.
Prior to completing the above activity, we reviewed the chart below
Next, children sorted words according to the correct category.
